Shoebox Story: Firm Foundation

Updated: Apr 21, 2023

Moving day finally came and wonderful men with pick-up trucks transferred all of our boxes and files from the Executive Director’s garage to our 800 square foot office on Davie Road. We managed to pack a lot into that tiny space! We had a waiting room, an office, two counseling rooms, a supply closet, and a wide hallway where volunteers could work at a makeshift desk – and the busiest room in the building, a bathroom!

Before the carpet was laid, the board, our staff of one, and those first few volunteers took big black magic markers and walked through the center, writing favorite verses of Scripture on the concrete floors and praying about  everything that would take place within those walls in the days to come.

On moving day, before the first boxes were unloaded from the truck, everyone who was onsite that day walked through the center one more time, praying for God’s Spirit to inhabit every nook and cranny of the building. Most of our furniture was used; the pictures came from someone’s attic, and the filing cabinets had a few dents in them, but we were so excited to have everything we needed to begin to minister to women who were considering abortion!

That’s how Hope was born in Broward County, built on a firm foundation with Jesus as the Cornerstone. “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” – Psalm 127:1
